transfer features from the legacy branch to the master branch for 0.1.x

@nils-brinckmann I implemented the concurrency control properties (MAX_WORKERS and QUEUE_SIZE) in the legacy branch (v.0.0.18) and will now try to transfer most new features (including the concurrency control props) from the legacy branch into the master one.
