Interface the DE Viewer for live / post-cruise DSHIP data visualization
The DSHIP system is used on all large german research vessels. In its database, a) information is collected on device operations (gear in the water, gear at the bottom, etc.) and b) data is recorded on sensors that the vessel operates. While most scientific data is recorded elsewhere, metadata on device operations is all available inn the DSHIP database. After a cruise, data is transferred to the DSHIP servers at BBSH where interested users can query the database for data and metadata.
The DE viewer could implement a feature to visualize all DSHIP data of a cruise over time. Little vessels could move around (and ROVs, AUVs), CTDs could go up and down through the water column, etc. Unfortunately, there is currently no documented API for DSHIP and there is no WMS/WFS service or the like. Datasets have to be requested by time/gear and downloaded via https. An API exists (e.g. at http://dship2.bsh.de:8080/dship-extraction/rest-presentation for RV Sonne, at http://dship3.bsh.de:8080/dship-extraction/rest-presentation for RV Maria S Merian). Some data can be visualized (sea surface temparture, salinity, weather data, underwater navigation data).
The goal would be to select a cruise in the GUI and then be able to replay it - with all operations and some of the data.
